Why vintage fashion?

If you have ever stood in a retail clothing store and just felt overwhelmed by the racks of identical looking clothes, or your wellbeing is taking a toll trying to keep up with trends, or maybe you are concerned about the impact of fast fashion, then maybe vintage fashion could be worth looking into.

Is this a familiar sight?

What is vintage fashion?

Vintage fashion generally refers to pieces of clothing dating from 20 years back and until the 1920s, though even this is subjectiveIt has been rising in popularity recently due to the likes of Megan Markle and Bella Hadid donning vintage pieces. However, it is more than a look. It is also a mentality, as it generally encourages a slower model of consumption, valuing longevity and quality over price and convenience. But what does this matter, and how could it be important to you? Let us compare this to the current state of fashion in 2020.

Modern fashion.

So, by now, it should be no surprise to you that the modern fashion industry is one of the most destructive and unethical industries. With the rise of mass production, mass distribution, mass consumption and mass wastage, the fashion cycle and life of a garment in 2020 is ridiculously fast. Clothing made this fast is not meant to last, nor is it intended to, as it seems that trends can change within a week at least or even at most overnight.

What can vintage fashion do for you?

Vintage fashion encourages a more conscious approach to fashion. By having a specific style, you should not feel the need to change your wardrobe every week based on how society wants you to dress. You can take back control from the big fashion corporations by dressing in a way that is ethical, sustainable, and uniquely you, because that is more timeless than any other trend.

My purpose.

In this blog, I will help you make that change over from fast fashion, by giving you my tips about dressing vintage and keeping it sustainable. From where the best vintage and second-hand stores are in Perth, to how to slowly incorporate vintage elements into your wardrobe. Together, let's adopt a slower approach to fashion, one that prioritises individuals and the environment over the 'mass' and 'trends'.
